چکیده

Despite the fact that approximate computations have come to dominate many areas of computer science, the field of program transformations has focused almost exclusively on traditional semanticspreserving transformations that do not attempt to exploit the opportunity, available in many computations, to acceptably trade off accuracy for benefits such as increased performance and reduced resource consumption. We present a model of computation for approximate computations and an algorithm for optimizing these computations. The algorithm works with two classes of transformations: substitution transformations (which select one of a number of available implementations for a given function, with each implementation offering a different combination of accuracy and resource consumption) and sampling transformations (which randomly discard some of the inputs to a given reduction). The algorithm produces a (1 + ε) randomized approximation to the optimal randomized computation (which minimizes resource consumption subject to a probabilistic accuracy specification in the form of a maximum expected error or maximum error variance).

Synthesis of Randomized Accuracy-Aware Map-Fold Programs

We present Syndy, a technique for automatically synthesizing randomized map/fold computations that trade accuracy for performance. Given a specification of a fully accurate computation, Syndy automatically synthesizes approximate implementations of map and fold tasks, explores the approximate computation space that these approximations induce, and derives an accuracy versus performance tradeoff...

Accuracy-Aware Program Transformations

Program approximation has been accepted as a necessary and useful technique for solving time-consuming computational problems since the inception of computer science. However, for a long time it has been treated exclusively as an algorithmic problem – a domain expert, computer scientist, or a developer has been responsible for proposing, implementing, and evaluating approximate algorithms. Up t...

Chisel: Reliability- and Accuracy-Aware Optimization of Approximate Computational Kernels Citation

The accuracy of an approximate computation is the distance between the result that the computation produces and the corresponding fully accurate result. The reliability of the computation is the probability that it will produce an acceptably accurate result. Emerging approximate hardware platforms provide approximate operations that, in return for reduced energy consumption and/or increased per...

(Relative) Safety Properties for Relaxed Approximate Programs

Researchers have recently begun to explore a new class of program transformations called approximate program transformations. These program transformations take an existing program and produce a new, relaxed approximate program that trades accuracy of its results for increased performance. In this paper, we explore how developers can use relational reasoning to verify relative properties of rel...
